A Coastal Retreat Designed for Shelter, Warmth, and Quiet Living
Tucked within a 500-acre oceanfront farm in East Sooke, British Columbia, The Farmhouse was designed as a quiet retreat deeply connected to the rugged coastal landscape surrounding it.
From the beginning, the vision for the home was rooted in restraint — a structure that would settle naturally into the forest, withstand the intensity of the coastal environment, and feel calm, warm, and restorative year-round. Rather than dominating the site, the architecture was intentionally understated, allowing the surrounding trees, rock, and ocean views to define the experience of the property.
The home was carefully positioned to provide shelter from the harsh ocean winds while maintaining a strong connection to the landscape beyond. Clean architectural lines and a restrained material palette allow the structure to recede into the trees, creating a sense of quiet permanence within the site.
Throughout the project, the focus remained on creating spaces that felt both grounded and welcoming. Covered outdoor living areas provide protected moments to pause and take in the surrounding coastline, while expansive glazing frames shifting light, weather, and views throughout the day.
Inside, the material palette was designed to reflect the rugged beauty of the surrounding environment. Raw wood textures, concrete floors, and natural finishes create warmth and authenticity, while the wood-burning stove anchors the home with a sense of comfort and retreat during the colder coastal months.
Above the kitchen, a light-filled loft introduces contrast to the grounded materiality below. Skylights draw natural light deep into the home, creating a bright and airy atmosphere that balances the heavier textures of the architecture and maintains a constant connection to the sky and surrounding forest canopy.
More than a guest house, The Farmhouse was designed as an experience — a place to slow down, reconnect with nature, and feel protected from the elements while remaining immersed within them.
The result is a home that feels timeless, deeply personal, and inseparable from the landscape it inhabits.
